The first two ingredients in this dog food are turkey and chicken. Although quality items, raw poultry contains about 80% water. After cooking, most of that moisture is lost, reducing the meat content to just a fraction of its original weight.

And lastly, this food contains chelated minerals, minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.

Evo is ranked as one of the top dog foods by Dog Food Advisor, receiving it's rare 5-Star rating. As of the writing of this post Evo is perhaps the lowest carb, highest protein commercial dry dog and cat food brands available. So why can't you find it online and in most pet stores?
Back in 2010, Proctor and Gamble (P&G) bought Natura Pet Products, the former maker of Evo, California Natural, & Innova - all premium pet foods that were pioneers in the market for healthy dog and cat food. Unfortunately, P&G was just not equipped to handle premium foods that needed to be sold though specialized and well-informed independent pet stores. After the P&G takeover Evo started to receive wider distribution, but the strict manufacturing standards to create such a premium food just couldn't keep up with the scale. Independent stores even began to abandon the brand because they feared that P&G would degrade the product quality.
Eager to prove them wrong P&G implemented some serious improvements on already top of the line quality standards, but got unlucky when a single bag of dog food tested positive for salmonella. In an abundance of precaution, sweeping voluntary recalls were made to ensure that there was zero possibility of any dogs or cats getting sick. There were no confirmed cases of any dogs or cats getting sick from Evo, but the recall was so large and took product off the market for so long that many people were forced to find other brands to feed their pets. This lack of customer base caused even more independent stores to stop selling Evo leaving a void in the market for distribution.
Online stores like Chewy.com stepped in with the promise of delivering Evo to those who still wanted the food, but a tech company like Chewy was never really cut out to give the personal insights, the community learning, and specialized attention to matching your dog or cat to the right food. Transitioning your dog or cat to such a rich, nutrient dense food like Evo can take time and support from an expert. In fact, most of the foods under the Natura Pet Products umbrella require this kind of attention, and the P&G / tech company combination just wasn't working.
In 2014 P&G decided to exit the pet food industry all together. Mars stepped up to the plate and took over the pet care division, acquiring all of the P&G pet brands. Mars has a long history as one of the largest family-run business in the country. They also have successfully managed diverse businesses within the pet industry from entry level to ultra premium pet foods. Under Mars's guidance the process to turn Evo and the other Natura brands around finally began. Mars dropped some of the Evo and California Natural recipes to focus on making a tight range of the best possible dog and cat foods available under the Evo and California Natural labels.
With the food production under control it was time to focus on the pet parents. Ultra premium pet foods like Evo and California Natural aren't something you just go out and buy without some consultation and a community to support your dog or cat's transition to a healthier diet. Experts like those found in your local independent pet supply store have the knowledge and resources to make a transition to one of the best foods on the market easier and more manageable. That kind of support and community just isn't something you find at big tech giants like Chewy.com.
WHY LESS IS MOREThe more ingredients a food has, the higher the likelihood it may include an ingredient your dog may be sensitive to. Our recipes use fewer ingredients to help dogs avoid the dietary triggers commonly found in many other foods.
Innova Evo dry dog food is a high protein, low carbohydrate and grain-free kibble made by Natura Pet Products, Inc. Natura Pet Products advertises Evo as an "alternative for raw feeders and home-cookers". Evo dry dog food is not a raw product, but the company claims that the high content of meat in the food makes the kibble a supplement to or a replacement for raw food diets. Innova Evo is a premium dog food, which is not sold in supermarkets. It is available in select pet food stores.
Choose which type of Innova Evo dry dog food that you want to purchase. Evo is available in two flavors - regular (turkey and chicken) and beef. Choose whichever flavor your dog prefers, or alternate flavors for variety. Evo is also available in two kibble sizes - large bites and small bites. Large bites are appropriate for large-breed dogs and small bites are appropriate for small-breed dogs or dogs that prefer small kibble. Innova sells a reduced fat version of Evo for overweight or senior dogs.

The EVO product line is somewhat limited but they offer dry kibble and canned food and treats. Their foods include chicken & turkey, red meat, herring & salmon, weight management, and senior formulas, (some of them in large and small bite versions), as well as canned foods that are 95 percent meat-based; and several treats.
Most dogs can eat turkey and chicken without any problems but if your dog has allergies or food intolerances to these ingredients, you can check out other EVO foods such as their herring & salmon or red meat formulas.
Although EVO says this food is grain free and gluten-free, it does contain tapioca starch which is pure carbohydrates. Kibbles need to contain some starch to maintain their dough consistency and their shape as they go through the extrusion process. Tapioca starch has virtually no nutritional value.
This particular food does have vitamin E supplement and rosemary extract listed on the label, which are natural preservatives. Many pet owners know that if your dog has any problems with seizures, you should avoid rosemary.
The food has chelated minerals which are often used in higher quality, more expensive dog foods. Chelated minerals are minerals where proteins have been bonded to the minerals, making them easier for your dog to digest.
You can purchase EVO dog food at certain pet supply stores and online. EVO suggests that you call pet stores before you drive a long distance to be sure that the store carries the food you are seeking. Not every pet store carries all of their foods. You can also have EVO delivered to your door by a company like PetFoodDirect.com that ships the food on an automatic schedule.

Great article! I remember all of this. I relied on California Natural, pre-P&G, because it was a limited ingredient food and my dog with allergies did well on it. Then everything changed for the worse with the P&G purchase, just as we all feared it would, and kept deteriorating. It was a terrible time for pet food as big companies, like P&G, bought up the smaller pet food businesses and poorly regulated imports flooded the supply chain (thanks to bad American oversight). It was really hard to know whom to trust.
what would be the new company by the original Natura owners?????? I bought Dr. Wendell O. Belfield, Orthomolecular Specialties, he told me he was involved in the very first Natura. Since he passed away, in August of 2018 I do not know how to find out about the ORIGINAL owners move to produce another dog food??Thank you for any info!!!
I was on the West Coast and owner of a holistic pet supply in 2010. Innova & Cal Nat were my best selling foods. I had an excellent relationship with the company rep and stood solidly behind their business model.
